Creating the lightsaber sounds
Ben Burtt who was in charge of producing sound effects in the Star Wars series, recorded the hum produced by old motors and a television set and recorded it with an unshielded microphone.
The moving of the lightsaber was created using the Doppler shift effect when the microphone moved closer and away from the sound source causing the famous pitch shifting when the light saber moves.
I recreated the lightsaber sound using a few hum samples I had, and moving my microphone closer and away from the speaker just like Ben Burtt did. I urge you to do the same is you want to experiment with it. It’s great fun.
